Secant Medical Reorganizes Management

Secant Medical LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Prodesco Inc., announced an organizational realignment including changes in management and the internal operational structure. All appointments became effective July 26.

Karen West was promoted to senior vice president of strategic development. West now is responsible for long- term strategy and planning. She previously served as vice president of Secant Medical’s advanced technologies group. West joined Prodesco in 2000 as a manufacturing manager and senior process engineer in the medical products division. When Secant Medical was formed in 2002, she became manufacturing director, a position that she held for twoyears until becomingquality director.

Jeff Koslosky was promoted to the role of vice president, ofadvanced technologies. He joined Prodesco in 2000 as a quality engineer, and was promoted to research and development engineer in 2002, subsequently serving as senior research and development engineer and research and development manager. In 2005, Koslosky became research and development director, and then was nameddirector of technology and product development after a 2009 corporate restructure. He now will oversee the integration of business development and marketing in addition to product development, materials, biology and chemistry.

Carlos Valdes was promoted to vice president, operations integration. Valdes joined Secant Medical in March as director of information technology and business systems. His responsibilities now will include manufacturing engineering, facilities, and maintenance management as well as support of operations, quality, and development. Roger Scott assumes Valdes’ former role.

Former DJO CEO Elected to Alphatec Board of Directors

Alphatec Holdings Inc., the parent company of Alphatec Spine Inc., has elected Leslie H. Cross the non-executive board chairman. Cross recently retired as president and CEO of DJO Global Inc., a position he held since 1995. He had been with DJO since 1990 and continues to serve as both a director and board chairman. During his tenure at the Vista, Calif., firm, revenues grew from about $30 million to $966 million (adjusted EBITDA in 2010 of $262 million).

“I am pleased that Les Cross has agreed to serve as the chairman of our Board of Directors,” said Mortimer Berkowitz III, chairman of the board’s executive committee. “Les is a talented business leader who has repeatedly driven growth, profitability and shareholder value in the orthopedics industry.”

Pioneer Surgical Technology Names New Chief Accounting Officer

Pioneer Surgical Technology Inc., has named Chad Kolean chief accountingofficer. Kolean’s first official day was Sept. 1. Kolean brings more than 20 years of senior financial management experience and knowledge in such areas as control of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissionreporting, cost accounting, cash management, tax preparation and budgeting. He last served as corporate controller forTomoTherapy Inc. in Madison, Wis.

Pioneer Surgical Technology is located in Marquette, Mich.

Globus Medical Adds to Board of Directors

Globus Medical Inc. has appointed Ann D. Rhoads to its board of directors.

“Ms. Rhoads brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in finance, strategy, and business management,” said David Paul, chairman and CEO of Globus Medical.

Rhoads currently serves as executive vice president, chief financial officer, treasurer and secretary for San Diego, Calif.-based Zogenix Inc., a pharmaceutical company commercializing and developing products for the treatment of central nervous system disorders and pain. She previously served as senior vice president and chief financial officer for Premier Inc., a healthcare service company where she had a hand in financial management, strategic planning, business development, information technology, ethics and compliance. Rhoads also currently is on the board of directors at San Jose, Calif.-based Novellus Systems Inc.

“Ann’s expertise and background will be invaluable as a member of our audit committee, and help Globus … grow towards our goal of becoming the preeminent spine company,” Paul concluded.

Rhoads has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and a master of business administration from Harvard Business School in Boston, Mass.

Bacterin Introduces Corporate Restructuring

Bacterin International Holdings Inc. has implemented a company reorganization that includes several new hires.

“As our first strategic reorganization in six years, our management team is now more integrated and aligned, and is now better prepared to meet the increasing demand for our medical device and biologics products,” said Guy Cook, Bacterin’s chairman and CEO. “Along with three additional procurement agency partners added last quarter, we now have a greater ability to both procure additional donor tissues and expand our processing capacity to meet our growth objectives.”

The management changes involved 14 positions for which the company made new hires or internal promotions. Ten positions were newly created, four were existing, and one was eliminated.

Among the changes, Darrel Holmes was promoted to chief operating officer, taking over from Jesus Hernandez, who left Bacterin to pursue other interests. Hernandez’s former position as vice president of biologics was eliminated. Holmes will manage the company’s medical device and biologics divisions and oversee U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and ISO/CE Marking certification/registrations. He has more than 30 years of leadership in operations and site management, strategic planning, product development, technology transfer, engineering and IT and

manufacturing, as well as experience establishing quality control systems and maintaining medical device and biologics operations in compliance with FDA quality systems regulations, good manufacturing practices, and ISO requirements.

Molly Mason was promoted to vice president of marketing and national accounts. Mason will continue to develop and oversee Bacterin’s integrated marketing campaigns, brand development, product positioning and communication, as well as implement training programs for the direct and indirect distribution network. She also will manage national corporate partnerships and relations with group purchasing organizations, independent delivery networks, and larger hospital systems. Mason has more than 10 years of marketing and customer service experience.

Todd Meyer, M.D., was promoted to research and development director. Meyer has been with Bacterin for six years, and now is responsible for new products, development of intellectual property, regulatory strategy and management of alliance projects.

AOFAS Names New Leaders

Judith F. Baumhauer, M.D., M.P.H, has been named president of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), and Steven L. Haddad, M.D., was chosen as vice president The

announcements were made during the AOFAS’ 27th annual meeting in Keystone, Colo., on July 15.

Baumhauer is the first woman to serve as president, and she also will be on the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Outreach & Education Fund. She is a professor of orthopedics and associate chair of academic affairs at the University of Rochester in New York. Baumhauer has a long history with AOFAS, as a member of the AOFAS finance committee and a reviewer for the Foot & Ankle International journal. She also has served as the AOFAS board vice president and secretary, and

as editor of the member newsletter. Baumhauer has received the Roger Mann Award and the J. Leonard Goldner Award.

“The AOFAS membership is dedicated to advancing patient care of the foot and ankle through research, education and humanitarian efforts,” Baumhauer said. “I am honored to lead such a dedicated, vibrant, committed group of orthopedic surgeons.”

Haddad is an associate professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Illinois, and division head, foot and ankle surgery in the department of orthopedic surgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He previously has served as secretary and member-at-large on the AOFAS board and has been on various committees, including the education committee, young physicians section and occupational health committee. Haddad also is a recipient of the Roger Mann Award.

“I am honored to be elected vice president of the AOFAS,” Haddad said. “Our society is committed to providing the highest quality care to our patients with foot and ankle problems through progressive research and innovative education. I am committed to serving to help our Society achieve this goal.”

Baumhauer received her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed her residency at Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. Baumhauer’s fellowship in foot and ankle medicine occurred at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Haddad received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., and completed his residency at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. His fellowship occurred at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

Accellent Names New VP of Sales and Marketing

Accellent Inc. has named James McGorry executive vice president of sales and marketing. His first official day was Aug. 29.

“Jim brings operational and commercial experience to our global sales and marketing organization. With more than 25 years of experience in medical devices and pharmaceutical based businesses, Jim will add significant depth to our senior management team,” said Don Spence, Accellent president and CEO.

McGorry joins Accellent from Genzyme Corporation, where he served as senior vice president, oncology, from 2003 to 2010. Between 1998 and 2003, he held other positions within Genzyme, including senior vice president; general manager, cardiac devices; and senior vice president, general manager, bio-surgical specialties. Before that, McGorry spent more than 10 years with Baxter Healthcare and its predecessor, American Hospital Supply Corporation.

McGorry graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point with a bachelor of science degree in engineering and served in the U.S. military from 1979 to 1985. He also received an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
